The Importance of Appreciating the Arts

Imagine riding in a car that is driving down a highway.  Are there billboards?  Is there music playing on the radio?  Now imagine the same ride with blank billboards and static instead of music on the radio. Without art, even something as simple as driving is boring. Appreciating art is about its many genres, interpretation, and funding.

There are multiple genres in art, along with their own sub-genres. Literature is one genre that millions of people around the world love. Over 32 million people have read The Hunger Games, alone(People Magazine, March 2012). Another genre is visual art. This genre has many sub-genres, like photography, paintings, and drawings. If photography did not exist, many people would not have memories captured in a frame. Music is also a very popular art. There is a type for everyone. Someone might like pop music. Another could like classical. For example, music is so popular that Adele's album 21 is sold every seven seconds on iTunes(Apple). If people knew about the many genres of art, they would appreciate art.

The interpretation of art is also important. A lot of people have a hard time understanding certain types of literature, especially poetry. This is mainly because poetry is usually based off of personal experiences and views a poet has on current events and life. So, if someone has not experienced the death of a spouse and has read a poem about it, they can find it difficult to see the poet or narrator's feelings. Another case of misinterpretation is in music. For example in the song Teenagers, by My Chemical Romance is not only a song telling the listener that teenagers scare the singer, there is a deeper meaning to it. "It's about how teenagers are subject to violence," says Gerard Way, singer and songwriter, he is trying to bring the world to the awareness of this(My Chemical Romance Welcomes You to The Black Parade, The Black Parade Deluxe Edition). This is only one song out of thousands upon thousands with an under-lying meaning. Drama is also easily misinterpreted. Shakespeare, for example, is sometimes hard to understand because it is written differently than today's writing. Analyzing these can make it easier to understand all of the above. Art's understanding is very important in the admiration of it.

Funding is the most important. In state budget cuts, the arts program is almost always the first to go. Even when the budget is not cut, the arts program can be cut to better the, 'ever-precious,' sports program. In the Richland Area School District, money was taken from the arts program to construct a new football field. Now imagine a sports team running out on the field with jerseys without their logo. It would look unnatural and unappealing. Without being exposed to the arts, the creators of these logos might not have created them. With the little funding the arts programs already have, it has caused many schools to center around sports, under-recognizing what many talented students have done in the field of art. The Forest Hills website doesn't even have a tab for the art program. But, of course, it has, 'Sports Teams' and 'Athletics' tabs(link: www.fhsd.k12.pa.us/site/defaul…). The arts program is almost non-existent in many schools. This is why funding is very important to the arts and the life of it in the community and schools.

Imagine again no billboards or music. Without art, the world is boring. There is a type of art for everyone. Learning to interpret art is very beneficial. Funding is essential to the arts. In conclusion, be involved and appreciative of the arts. Remember, a world without it is not a place in which one wants to live.
Okay, so, I wrote this persuasive essay for English class and my teacher graded it 100%, saying it's an A+ paper. Soooo, I thought it was worthy and relevant to this website. Tell me what you think.
